Each community that we work with has its own unique characteristics and challenges. And, every Commit to Community project is tailored to suit the needs of that community. So, while each project looks different in the way it functions, the principles behind each project are the same.
Most Commit to Community projects begin work with local self help groups. With the support of our local partner organisations, community members form self help groups with the aim of developing their skills and access to resources. These groups receive training in areas such as health, nutrition, literacy and business and vocational skills.
They are also encouraged to start saving a small amount of money each week into a group account. Once this pool of savings has built up, members can take a loan from the group, accessing financial support that would otherwise be beyond their reach.
The loans are often taken to enable individuals to start up or expand small businesses, to invest in seed or livestock or used to cover unexpected medical expenses.
As well as building skills and knowledge, and improving facilities like safe water and sanitation, increasing household income is key to breaking the grip of poverty in these communities. Having a steady source of income means families can afford to send their children to school regularly, they can enjoy a more nutritious diet and pay for medical needs.
Encouraging small businesses is a great way to boost the community as a whole, as they provide necessary goods and services, regular income and the more successful businesses are able to provide jobs for other friends and family.
Other Commit to Community projects have a more specific focus. Some projects work to support and empower people living with disabilities; some focus on serving marginalised groups in society – such as refugees, or those affected by HIV; and others focus on agricultural or environment issues.
