Survive Past 5 - Youth Action

'Survive Past 5' is a program that allows your youth group to help make a difference for poor children across the world.

In 2009, 8.8 million children in poor countries died before their fifth birthday. Most died from treatable causes such as measles, diarrhoea, and pneumonia. They died because their parents cannot access medical care, either because they cannot afford it or because their country cannot afford to provide the medical services.

Thankfully, this terrible statistic has been declining over the past four decades. With improvements in the quality of medical services available to poor families, an increase in the ability of poor families to afford medical care, and an improvement in the circumstances in which poor families live (eg. when kids can access clean drinking water or sleep under anti-malaria bed nets), more children are surviving through childhood. In 2010, the figure is likely to be 7.7 million children that die before their 5th birthday, but this is still too many.

Your youth group can take action to help using the Survive Past 5 resources. This is a complete program for a youth event focused on children living in poverty and how God wants us, as Christians, to repond. Survive Past 5 includes:

  • an event theme,
  • suggestions for games and activities,
  • a talk outline,
  • an opportunity to donate to SAO Children, and
  • an advocacy activity to send a postcard to your local Member of Parliament.
