SAO Children
|
SAO Children is the name of Baptist World Aid Australia’s program focussed on children and includes child sponsorship. Our local Christian partners work with disadvantaged communities to make a long-lasting difference to children living in poverty and build hope for a better future.
SAO Children works in Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Malawi, Bangladesh and the Philippines, and will soon begin programs in other countries.
How SAO Children works
By involving children, their families and communities in finding solutions to the needs of children, SAO Children can make a significant difference to the well-being of all children in the community. Some examples of how SAO Children works with the community to bring about lasting change are:
-
SAO Children trains parents to grow their own nutritious food helping them prevent malnutrition in their children.
-
SAO Children assists families to increase their incomes, often through developing small scale businesses like raising livestock. This reduces the reliance on children to earn an income and makes it easier for families to send their children to school.
-
SAO Children works with adolescents to help equip young people with the knowledge and vocational skills to enhance their opportunities for employment. The program also helps young people develop their leadership skills and inspires them to be change-agents within their communities.
-
SAO Children works with communities to help them improve the environment in which they live, for example securing safe water sources and adequate sanitation facilities.
Whole community activities like these help create a safer and healthier community, in which children can grow, learn and thrive.

Supporting the most vulnerable
SAO Children also works with Christian partners who address the needs of some of the most vulnerable children. These children have been trafficked, abused, exploited or have been forced to flee their homes as refugees.
SAO Children provides grants to a number of organisations working with the most vulnerable children including:
-
a coalition of organisations working to end slavery in Cambodia
-
an organisation working to rescue victims of sex trafficking in India and prosecute the traffickers
-
an organisation providing schooling a medical services for Burmese refugee children living in Malaysia
