Joseph’s story is one of poverty...
Like so many children in Africa, Joseph was born into a world of disadvantage.
When he was just four years old, he was orphaned and went to live with his grandparents. They did their best to care for him but simply lacked the resources to meet even his most basic needs. Joseph was weakened by ongoing hunger. School was not an option and health care was not affordable. Joseph’s life was reduced to a struggle for survival.
Two years ago Joseph’s community started working with SAO Child Sponsorship, Baptist World Aid Australia’s child centred program and already this has had a life changing effect for Joseph.
Joseph’s grandmother joined a self help group with other adults from their village and started to put aside savings and learn more about caring for children. She took out a loan from the group’s saving plan so Joseph’s grandfather could open a small general store. Income from the store was enough to pay off their loan and cover the cost of Joseph’s schooling – an opportunity Joseph had long hoped for.
“Before, my grandmother and grandfather could not send me to school, but after joining [SAO Child Sponsorship], I now go to school and even play with my friends.” - Joseph
Baptist World Aid Australia works in many communities like Joseph’s to overcome poverty and foster an environment where children can grow, learn and thrive.
