Raising fish for food adds protein and essential nutrients to a family’s diet. Your gift helps communities in Bangladesh and Cambodia learn about fish raising and pond building. Families are also provided with fishlings to get their project started.
For example, our partner WDO is assisting community members to dig ponds and create their own fish farms, which provides a nutritious source of food and extra income. Families contribute labour and some construction materials towards building and preparing ponds, which gives them a strong sense of ownership of the project.
The man in the photograph is called Saiso and he is from Bangladesh. For a number of years he has been involved in a self-help group, where community members join together to pool their savings and receive training in vital areas including healthcare and small business skills.
After the group's savings had built up, they decided to take on a group project to increase their individual incomes. Together, they have leased a pond for two years to cultivate fish and members of the group take turns to tend to the crop. Traditionally there is a scarcity of fish at certain times of the year and by selling fish at these times they can make a good profit to share amongst the group.
