Your gift assists at-risk villagers in Cambodia and Bangladesh by helping them to protect their families and prepare for the impact of cyclones, droughts and floods on their incomes and their access to food and water.

In emergency situations, village members will often have no choice but to resort to drinking from unsafe water sources. Other issues include soil erosion, destruction of crops and excessive dust inhalation. Our partners in Cambodia and Bangladesh are working to train community groups on disaster adaption techniques so that they are prepared and equipped for these emergencies when they strike.

In Bangladesh, our partner is working with communities close to the coast where flooding from sea water is common. These communities are trained in a number of risk reduction techniques to help save lives during floods and reduce the damage caused by the flood waters. These techniques include raising up the floors of homes, animal shelters, water pumps and latrines to stand above flood levels. They also raise the banks around drinking water sources and plant trees to prevent erosion. Other techniques include constructing bamboo shelves to keep food and water containers safe during flooding and hiding watertight jars under the floors of their homes to keep valuable items safe should they have to evacuate and to hold food and fresh water for when they return.
